courage

I love being around courageous people who are willing to lean into challenge in hopes of finding a different way. People who might be terrified of taking the next step but somehow muster up the courage to do so. These people inspire me.

One of the things I love about my calling as a counselor is that I get to work with all sorts of brave people who find themselves tired of not living the kind of life they really want. They call seeking a different way, a step that alone shows significant courage. Reaching out in a time of need, whether opening up to a friend, pastor, or therapist, or attending a 12-step group, is courage in action.

I’ve worked with people from many different walks of life, different careers, and life situations and yet they all had one thing in common. They each possessed just enough courage to invite someone else into their difficulty. That kind of courage has the power to change lives.

Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in
Show me how big your brave is

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave
